A large ball falls freely under gravity, hits the floor and bounces. Its motion is recorded using a CBR2 connected to a TI-Nspire handheld. The software automatically creates displacement, velocity and acceleration variables and all of these can easily be plotted against time.

Students can then use straight-line tools to calculate a value for g, the acceleration due to gravity. This result can be compared with the international standard value, 9.81m/s2, and a meaningful discussion of accuracy can then take place.

There are more details about this activity in Capturing Data: Modelling and Interpretation, one of a series of booklets presenting STEM Activities with TI-Nspire, published by Texas Instruments in April 2010.
